Welcome to my site, Everyone!
My name is Yolanda Stevens and I received my Bachelor of Science Education in 2002 at Florida A&M University. I was initially going to teach social studies to middle-schoolers when the life-changing opportunity presented itself immediately following my graduation. I was offered a full-time summer position to provide instructional support to students with moderate to severe learning, communicative and behavioral disabilities. It was that experience that opened my eyes into understanding how beautiful, talented, smart and diverse our special population of students are. That lead me to become certified in Special Education and the rest is history. Within the last sixteen years, I have been employed as a special education teacher, autism coach, program specialist and now Intensive Reading/co-English teacher to students with varying exceptionalities. I am currently seeking a Master's in Special Education concentrating in the area of students with learning and behavioral challenges.
As stated above, I currently work as an Intensive Reading and English co-teacher at Miami Southridge Senior High School. I am responsible for about 15 students with various exceptionalities in addition to teaching a hundred and twenty general education students. I collaborate with the general education teachers of these students with disabilities to ensure that the students’ goals and accommodations are appropriate.
My spare time is spent with my three children, husband and dog, Penny. I like to read anything by Mary Higgins Clark and Kimberla Lawson Roby, cook and travel. I also enjoy watching documentaries, creating graphic organizers for my students and exploring the restaurants in the South Miami-Dade area with my family and friends.
In the next five years, I plan to continue working in the special education and reading fields helping students and their families in the areas of reading, communication and behavior. Two websites that I cannot do without are https://www.commonlit.org
and https://www.noredink.com. These sites provide great tools in teaching students in the areas of reading and grammar. I am extremely humbled and blessed to be afforded the opportunity to work with the population that I serve. I know my students will go on to do amazing things in the present and near future.
